Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fat, mainly in legs and arms. This disorder almost exclusively affects women and can lead to pain, swelling and a feeling of heaviness. It is often confused with obesity or lymphoedema, but has distinctive features that require a specific diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

Characteristics of lipoedema

• Fat distribution. Fat accumulates symmetrically in the legs, from the hips to the ankles, and sometimes in the arms, but does not affect the hands and feet. The face and trunk are generally spared.
• Pain and sensitivity. The affected areas are often painful to the touch and can easily develop bruises.
• Swelling. Swelling may increase throughout the day and improve at night, but it tends to worsen with time.

After the surgery, it is recommended to wear a compression garment for a few days or weeks upon medical indication. This will improve the healing process, reduce oedema and swelling, and in some cases improve the appearance of scars.
